When Ankalaev campaigned for this fight, he said he would not shoot for a withdrawal during the first three laps. He spoke of the way he would strike with Pereira and thought he would eliminate the light heavyweight champion. I think Ankalaev will turn for a withdrawal in the first half of the first round tomorrow evening. His success rate will tell the story to the UFC 313. If Pereira can defend withdrawals and slam his kicks at home, I think he will stop Ankalaev. However, if he cannot stop withdrawals, we are in a long night of grappling and control.
There is a large part of me who wants to choose Ankalaev. He can hold on to his feet and he is certainly the best wrestler. However, there is just something special about Poatan who gives me a break when writing these predictions. I don’t think this magic conduct is finished and I think it will continue beyond tomorrow evening. Give me Alex Pereira in the distance to keep his title UFC.
