Report: Arthur Smith was the first choice of UNC, not Bill Belichick

Before the people of North Carolina made Bill Belichick the next head coach of the program, they had a first choice.

As indicated by Espn.com, Plan A was Arthur Smith.

Smith, who played a guard for the Tar Heels from 2001 to 2005, led the Falcons for three seasons. He is now the Steelers’ offensive coordinator.

According to the report, Belichick had made known his interest in work by contacting the former senator of Florida Marco Rubio. Rubio, now Secretary of State, then contacted the Northern Caroline Senator Thom Thillis. However, the UNC Muckety-Mucks wanted Smith to replace Mack Brown.

“They all hoped that Smith returns to Chapel Hill, then whether it be Belichick or someone else, it would have been a questionable point. Smith is what they wanted,” an anonymous source told Espn.com.

Smith was initially intrigued. He decided later do not continue the work. It was then that, according to the report, the process separated between the candidates prosecuted by the sports director Bubba Cunningham and the members of the UNC board of directors who intended to hire Belichick.

And, of course, the pro-Belichick side prevailed. And $ 10 million a year. And total program control.

But if Smith had wanted to return to his Alma Mater, Belichick would potentially be used at all, for the second consecutive off -season.
